Abstract

The Meaning and Function of Abstinence for the Peranap Malay Community in Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu Regency. Abstinence is a belief by the ancient Malay community related to customs/customs and cultural heritage of their ancestors. Mostly that abstinence is passed down from generation to generation orally. Abstinence from being used by parents aims to educate people to become a moral generation, especially the younger generation so that they can lead to the application of good values ​​that can be practiced in life. However, now abstinence is slowly disappearing in modern times, because the current generation only views abstinence as a threat, frightening and smells of myth and death. This study examines the types, meanings and functions of the prohibitions of the Peranap Malay community in the Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu Regency with the research problems, (1) What are the types of abstinence in the Peranap Malay community, Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu Regency?, (2) What is the meaning of this research? is contained in the prohibitions of the Peranap Malay community, Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu Regency?, (3) What are the functions contained in the Peranap Malay community abstinence, Peranap Subdistrict, Indragiri Hulu Regency?. The purpose of this study is to explain and describe the problems related to the formulation of the problem, namely determining the type, meaning and function of abstinence. For the analysis the author uses the theory of abstinence by Effendy (2003) meaning by Pateda (2010) and function by Danandjaya (1991). The method that researchers use in this study is a descriptive method, with a qualitative approach. While the technique that the researcher used in this study was the technique of interviewing the informant directly, then recording all of the taboos found from the informant and this study also used observation techniques, the researcher who is also the Peranap Malay community has also heard of people around the researcher who use this technique. abstinence and from this experience, the researcher finally took data from what the researcher had heard as an addition to the research data, namely abstinence. The results of this study contained 61 data on abstinence expressions which were then grouped into 7 types of abstinence and analyzed using denotative and connotative meanings. This study also found three functions of abstinence expressions, namely the function as an educational tool for children and adolescents found as many as 24 data, a function as a thickener of religious emotions found as many as 12 data and a function as an explanation that can be accepted by the sense of a folk found as many as 25 data.
