Abstract

Offshore surface facilities have direct contact with seawater so it has the potential to experience corrosion. Sea water is oxidant so that when it meets the iron metal will accelerate the corrosion process in iron, therefore it is necessary to conduct research to overcome this problem. So in this study will test the rate of corrosion experienced by SS400 steel samples with coating using graphene oxide cassava skin. Graphene oxide from cassava skin is obtained by LPE method which is the process of sonication and centrifugation to obtain a single layer of graphene oxide. Sonication using sonicator with the addition of water deionized and surfactant LAS for 4 hours. The advantages of sonication methods are that the process is easy and inexpensive, the production of large amounts of graphene oxide and the production of small amounts of waste. Centrifugation is performed at a speed of 1000 RPM for 30 minutes. Coating process is done on 15 pieces of steel SS400 with dimensions of 25mm x 25mm x 5mm with deep coating method. Furthermore, SS400 steel soaking using water with salinity (3.2%, 3.5% &3.7%) for 2 weeks and conducted corrosion rate test using weight loss method. SEM/EDX characterization shows that a layer has been formed at an magnification of X10,000 and a large carbon content in graphene oxide samples of 94.03%. The characterization of FTIR indicates the presence of C-O, O-H, C=C, C-H and C=O bonds which are the main characteristics of graphene oxide. Testing conducted on cassava skin GO coating samples showed the lowest average corrosion rate experienced by the 4gr GO coating sample of cassava skin which is 0.0313mmpy this value is much lower than the average corrosion rate of tampa coating sample which is 0.0863mmpy. Then observation of the effect of salinity on the average corrosion rate of the sample showed that the higher the salinity level, the higher the corrosion rate experienced by the sample, the salinity of 3.2% the average corrosion rate was 0.0579mmpy, the salinity of 3.5% the average corrosion rate to 0.0633mmpy &salinity 3.7% the average corrosion rate of 0.0673mmpy.
