Abstract

Flowline pipe is a transportation medium used to move oil and gas from the wellhead to the manifold. Pipes are very susceptible to corrosion due to various factors, for example due to the fluid content of formation water which has corrosive mineral content. One way to slow down the corrosion rate is to use corrosion inhibitors. Several studies have been carried out, namely by utilizing organic inhibitors because they have advantages compared to chemical inhibitors. Watermelon rind is a waste that is rarely used but contains cellulose, pectin, lignin which can function as metal absorbents, and L-Citruline which acts as a corrosion inhibitor. This study aims to determine the effect of watermelon rind extract in suppressing the corrosion rate of the pipeline. The process of extracting watermelon rind by maceration method using ethanol solvent, after that the FTIR test was carried out to determine the functional groups. The immersion process uses formation water dissolved with HCl and the addition of watermelon peel extraction inhibitors in various concentrations of 0, 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm and immersion time with variations of 240 hours and 360 hours. After that, the corrosion rate was calculated using the weight loss method. Based on the research, it was found that watermelon rind extract had an effect on the corrosion rate where the corrosion rate decreased with the addition of an inhibitor of watermelon rind extract. The best efficiency is at a concentration of 1000 ppm with an efficiency value of 90.32%. The corrosion rate increased with increasing immersion time which was indicated by immersion for 240 hours, the corrosion rate value was 0.07 mmy while at 360 hours immersion time, the corrosion rate was 0.15 mmy at the same concentration of 1000 ppm..
