Abstract

Propeller or boat propeller is a tool to produce thrust on a boat. Many fishermen use propellers made from combination of aluminum because it is easy to find on the market and cheap in price. But in general, aluminum propellers used are not long-lived. The most common damage is broken on propeller leaves, this is caused by a collision with hard objects. This study aims to improve the mechanical properties of propellers with the aging heat treatment process. The heat treatment includes: solutioning, which is holding the material at 540oC for one hour, then quenching, which is conducting rapid cooling by dipping the material into water at room temperature, and aging which is holding the material at an aging temperature of 180oC for 1,2,3 and 4 hours. The tests include composition tests, hardness tests, tensile tests and microstructure observations. The composition test results indicate the presence of dominant alloying elements in the form of Si, Cu and Zn. The results of the hardness and tensile tests showed that the highest hardness and tensile strength values were achieved at an aging time of 3 hours, with values of 142.8 HV and 173.70 MPa, respectively. The highest toughness is achieved at 2 hours aging time with value 4,162x106 J/m3. Aging time exceeding 3 hours will affect the decrease in hardness and tensile strength of the material. The micro structure of the material with an aging time of 3 hours has the Si matrix form which is more organized than the aging time of 1, 2, and 4 hours. Based on the results of the study, the 2 hour aging time is most suitable for the application of broken propellers, because at the aging time 2 hours has the highest toughness.
