Abstract

Linguistic is concerned with the nature of language and communication. It includes the following subareas: phonetic (the study of the production, acoustic and hearing of speech sound), phonology (the patterning of sounds), morphology (the structure of words), syntax (the structure of sentences), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (language in context), code mixing was also part of it. Code Mixing is the change of one language to another within the same utterance or in the same oral/written text. In this research, the researcher would like to find out the types of code mixing and reasons of code mixing used in Ngenest novel. The method of this research focused on descriptive qualitative method. The researcher found that in Ngenest novel has 5 types of code mixing, they were unit insertion, unit hybridization, sentence insertion, idiom and collocation and reduplication, and also 3 reasons found in this research they were to soften or strengthen request or commant, because of real lexical need, and to exclude other people when a commant is intended for only a limited audience. Finally, the result for this research found that 144 code mixing used in Ngenest novel. Most of the types of code mixind used in this novel was unit insertion 114, unit hybridization 10, sentence insertion 4, idiom and collocation insertion 12, and the last one reduplication 4. The most of reasons used in this novel was because of real lexical need. Keyword: Linguistic, Code Mixing, Ngenest Novel.
