Abstract

The growing era of consumptive behavior has covered all circles, especially in the university environment, namely students. This happens because individuals also follow a lifestyle due to the demands of association with their peers. Individuals want social status that is equal to their peers, thus they feel their self-esteem increases and are not ostracized by their peers. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between self-esteem and consumptive behavior. The subjects in this study were 270 students who were selected using incidental sampling. This study uses a consumptive behavior scale and a self-esteem scale. The results of hypothesis testing in this study have the result that there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and consumptive behavior in Riau Islamic University students. This means that the higher the self-esteem, the higher the consumptive behavior of students. Vice versa if the lower self-esteem obtained, the lower the consumptive behavior of students.
