Abstract

Scale on the distribution pipe is a problem that disturbs and affects the piping system on the surface, be it in the flowline, production line to the gathering station. Scales can be formed due to the content of various compounds that precipitate due to changes in pressure, temperature or pH which release dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) from solution. In general, reducing the scale in the oil field using inorganic acids such as HCl, H2SO4 and a mixture of HCl and CuSO4. In this study, the acid used was organic acid from the pyrolysis of oil palm shells and compared with HCl. Analysis carried out on organic acid content using GC-MS found 76 chemical compounds, among the 76 chemical compounds there were 12 dominant chemical compounds. The percentage of acidic compounds is 13.24%, namely formic acid, carbomic acid and acetic acid with pH = 2.8. The presence of these acid compounds in organic acids can erode and reduce the scale samples obtained from the X field distribution pipe. The test results of the chemical components of the sample scale using XR-F found 12 chemical components in the X field scale and the dominant is Barium of 48.2%. The effect of organic acid resulting from oil palm shell pyrolysis as a scale reduction was carried out by weighing the scale mass before soaking and after soaking with organic acid based on time. For 5 minutes the reduced scale percentage is 13,837%, 10 minutes 17,477%, 15 minutes 20,876% and 20 minutes 22,456%. After comparing with the test of scale reduction using HCl with various concentrations of 5, 10 and 15%, it was found that scale reduction using organic acids from oil palm shell pyrolysis was equivalent to scale reduction using 5% HCl for 20 minutes. 5% HCl is a strong acid with a pH = 0.3. The results of this research on organic acids resulting from oil palm shell pyrolysis can be recommended as a scale reducer to replace 5% HCl in 20 minutes. The use of organic acids can reduce the use of HCl, because 5% HCl is a strong acid which causes a negative impact on distribution pipes. Meanwhile, organic acids are weak acids because they come from natural plants.
