Abstract

Oil production of the well usually has emulsion, especially water in oil emulsion (w/o). With produced emulsion will result the problems such as increasing of viscosity so as fluid will be harsh to flow, forming (w/o) also can be impact corrosion on the surface equipment. Because of the negative impact created (w/o), so it have to be separated. This research will use electrocoagulation method as demulsification for (w/o). The (w/o) that analyzed that maked from suspension of 30% formation water and 70% crude oil. Formation water that analyzed will use Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) for obtaining Total Dissolved Solid (TDS). Demulsification processes of (w/o) will be taken place with electrocoagulation method. Determination will be held with 2 electrodes namely aluminium electrode and zinc electrode. These electrodes will be engineered with spacing between anode and cathode is 2 cm, the observations of separation on (w/o) will be held with many variations such as voltages (3 volts, 5 volts, 12 volt), the observation also will be held with variations of times (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes). The result of TDS determination is 146 ppm and pH is 7.8, TDS that be obtained indicating the low separation, pH value of above 7 indicates low separation. The electrocoagulation result using aluminium electrode obtained the best separation at 15 minutes with voltage of 5 volts namely 22 ml, the best separation at 15 minutes with 12 volts that is 26 ml. The electrocoagulation result with zinc electrode obtained the best separation at 15 minutes with voltage of 5 volts namely 19 ml, the best separation with voltage 12 volts namely 25 ml. Based on the demulsification of separated volume of water, the low pH and high TDS value will speed up the separation process. From the result of the electrocoagulation test, the magnitude of the voltage affects the speed of the water-in-oil emulsion separation process.
