Abstract

Drilling mud is an important factor in oil and gas driliing process. Success or failure of a drilling process depends on matched drilling mud. Because of that, drilling mud must have the ability suitable to the desired characteristic. The base ingredient of standart mud is bentonite (montmorilonit mineral) from Wiyoming United States. To reduce the cost, inovation is needed to make the drilling mud. Being a region with big clay reserve potential, it is necessary to conduct study towards local clay to determine clay type and contained mineral to determine if that clay can be used as base ingredient of drilling mud. To determine mud rheology with local clay as the base ingredient, it is necessary to conduct test in Petroleum Engineer Laboratory, Islamic University of Riau. From the laboratoty study mud’s characteristic like density, viscosity, resistivity,yield point, plastic viscosity,and gel strenght is obtained. And to obtain composition and structure of local clay mineral analysis of SEM and EDX is conducted. From the test, NaCO3 and NaOH are added as ion changer and to increase Na element of the mud. From the test, density 8,7 ppg, viscosity 15 cp , resistivity 10,5 Ω, yield point 1 lb/ft², gel strength 1° are obtained .Meanwhile the mineral composition of clay is C 20,73%, Al2O3 25,41%, SiO2 46,78%, K2O 1,67%, TiO2 0,85%, FeO 3,15%, and CuO 1,41%. From the analysis of mud rhelogy and chemical composition from Clay Illite Platty mineral from Riau Sumatera Tengah and addition of NaCO3 and NaOH to local Clay, the rheology of Clay Illite Platty based mud is the same as the usual Bentonite used as base ingredient of drilling mud with,API Spec13 A.
